How the college was established.

The history of the college and its establishment is traced back to the 1961 Symposium. During the Symposium, Tanzania's first President, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, delivered the now-famous Arusha Manifesto speech. The manifesto demonstrated Africans' commitment and interest in the conservation of wildlife habitats and species, and it emphasized the importance of specialist knowledge and trained manpower as prerequisites to this end.

The wildlife authorities spearheaded efforts to establish a college to train wildlife managers as a result of the resolutions from this Symposium.

Through their efforts, the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, was founded on June 24, 1963, with 25 students from Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Cameroon, and Tanzania.

During that time, the College offered diploma and certificate programs in Wildlife Management.

Tourism programs and bachelor degree levels of programs were introduced in the college late in 2011 with the goal of training wildlife and tourism officers to meet the need for wildlife sustainability in Africa.
